Preparing for your Ireland Trip
How to Prepare for Your Ireland Trip: Practical Tips for a Smoother Journey
Headed to the Emerald Isle? Whether it's your first time or a return pilgrimage, a little preparation goes a long way in making your trip smoother, more enjoyable, and less stressful. Here are some of my tried-and-true tips to help you prepare for your Ireland adventure—body, mind, and logistics.
1. The Basics First
Make sure your passport is up to date (some countries require at least 6 months of validity). Book your flight and lodging, and don't forget to check if your credit cards offer travel rewards or waive foreign transaction fees—they can save you a lot in the long run.
Should You Pay in Dollars or Euros?
Many places in Ireland will give you the option to pay in USD or EUR when using a card. While it might feel convenient to see the price in dollars, always choose to pay in euros.
Here’s why: paying in USD means the vendor sets the exchange rate—and they typically add a markup. When you pay in euros, your bank or credit card company handles the conversion, and you’ll almost always get a better rate. Just double-check that your card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees (many travel cards don’t)
Once your logistics are set, spend a little time with a map of Ireland. Research the local areas you'll be visiting—look into festivals, landmarks, and hidden gems. One of my favorite resources is GetYourGuide.com, where you can book local day excursions with trusted guides. It can save you time, money, and stress when navigating unfamiliar roads.
2. Start Walking—Now
Tourism in Ireland often means a lot of walking—on cobblestones, through hilly terrain, and along rugged cliffs. If you’re not used to daily movement, start now. Take daily walks, ideally including some inclines to build stamina. Invest in a pair of comfortable trail running shoes or hiking sneakers—and break them in well before you go.
3. Boost Your Immune System
Travel means crowds, airports, and exposure to all sorts of unfamiliar germs. Strengthen your immune system before you leave. I take a daily regimen of vitamins, but I also add Warrior Blend (an herbal immune supplement) and On Guard (doTERRA's immunity blend) during travel season. Whatever works for your body, now is the time to support it.
4. Prepare Your Stomach
Different countries = different foods. On my last trip to Ireland, I ordered “steak and vegetables” only to be served meat and three different kinds of potatoes. (Yes, it was delicious. No, my stomach wasn’t thrilled.)
If you’re someone who thrives on fresh produce or has dietary sensitivities, pack accordingly. I like to bring tuna packets, protein bars or shakes, and other lightweight, familiar foods. Some travelers even bring freeze-dried camping meals—just add hot water.
And here’s a gold tip: Charcoal tablets. They’ve saved me and my fellow travelers more than once from surprise stomach issues.
5. Get Used to the Cold
Ireland’s weather can be...moody. And chilly. Prepare your body by incorporating cold showers or cold plunges into your routine in the weeks leading up to your trip. Not only will it help your body acclimate to temperature shifts, but it can also give your immune system an extra boost.
6. Emergency Contacts & Worst-Case Planning
Not the funnest part of planning, but essential. Share your flight details, hotel information, and travel itinerary with a trusted person. Make a plan for communication if you lose your phone, and consider updating your will or at least making sure someone has access to important accounts and passwords in case of an emergency.
It’s not about being fearful—it’s about being smart and prepared so you can enjoy your travels with peace of mind.
Final Thoughts
Ireland is a land of magic, mist, and memory—and the more you prepare before you go, the more freely you can explore once you arrive. Take care of the essentials, support your body, and make space for the adventure. You’re not just going on a trip—you’re stepping into a living story.
